IN CHARACTER
Name: Link
Canon: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time / Majora's Mask
Canon Point: Majora's Mask, just before arriving on the Moon
Age: While he looks to be about ten to twelve, Link's true age is... difficult to place. He was locked in the Sacred Realm for seven years and magically matured so that he could handle the conflicts ahead, grew as he saved the world, and then he was also sent back to his original time and physical age. Not quite a child, not quite an adult, not exactly a teenager, either.

History: Comprehensive Link article | Ocarina of Time | Majora's Mask

Personality:
The first thing that people notice about Link is how incredibly quiet he is. He'll speak when spoken to and answer questions, but he just doesn't talk much. He's the kind of person who only talks when he has something important to say, and then, when he does, he speaks concisely. Often times, part of the first impression that Link leaves with people is just how serious and mature he is for a kid his age. While he does have his carefree side, this usually manifests in a go-with-the-flow kind of attitude, happy to engage in friendly competition and go exploring, but just as happy to laze around (and take naps). The kind of abundant energy that people normally associate with ten-year-olds seems to almost be muted with him.

This is because Link is not as truly young as he looks, and he's endured a lot of hardship even from a young age. He may have grown up among a forest race of perpetual children, but Link was something of an outcast. The rest of the Kokiri had guardian fairy companions, but he didn't. At least one of the Kokiri picked on him for this, and so Link learned early that he had to work hard to win the approval of his peers. This planted a seed of loneliness in him, and the feeling that he has to work to earn kindness and friendship -- to prove himself worthy. This also means he highly values the friends he does make, and rewards their friendship with unwavering loyalty.

After he left the forest, though, his adventures led to him being locked in a stasis until he was physically seventeen. Not only was he suddenly considered an adult, but he also was expected to save the world. Walking outside to see that the bright and colorful world that he had just been getting to know had been turned into a dark and tense place that is hard for everyone to live in left a distinct impact on him. The adventures he struggled through to set things right, even moreso. He grew up in a big hurry, had to mature and leave his childhood behind.

And it has all left Link struggling with the feeling that he has nowhere he belongs. This feeling was made permanent when he is returned to the happy, bright timeline of his youth after saving Hyrule. For the people he had been friends with before, the things they went through that forged those friendships never happened. He remembered hardships that no one else did, and while he wouldn't want them to know that suffering, it still meant they wouldn't understand what he's been through. The truth of his heritage also didn't help. He couldn't return to the forest, as he learned he wasn't a Kokiri. He didn't feel like he fit in among the normal Hylians, due to his life there, as well as due to his experiences as the Hero of Time. He was a hero, but he was still an outcast everywhere he turned.

But despite this, despite all of this, Link never lost his foundation of being a genuinely good person. This is what wins over everyone, from the Kokiri he grew up with, to the people whose pots he breaks, to the people who are scared and distrustful because of how the world had treated them. He goes out of his way to help people, and, being naturally empathetic, he always makes sure to listen to them. At work, he is competent and reliable. He follows through, and he almost never asks for anything in return. Perhaps most importantly, it's all done sincerely. He really does want to help people, regardless of the personal cost. He doesn't know any other way to live. He can't bring himself to turn people down, even when he's tired to the bone. When he looks around and sees someone suffering... If there is the chance that he can bring them happiness and alleviate their pain, how can he possibly say no?

Because of this kind of thinking, Link has a hard time accepting failure. Over the course of his adventures, he has learned that if he cannot do something, he simply needs to step back, re-evaluate, perhaps leave and learn some new tricks, and come back again. Adaptability and planning are both things he has come to be adept at handling. He's good at looking at a problem, weighing his options, what he can and can't do, and figuring out ways to work around what he lacks. This stems entirely from the fact that failure has had very heavy consequences for Link. If he didn't succeed, then everyone else would suffer for it. The fate of the world has weighed on his shoulders twice over by the time he saves Termina. He copes with the weight of this by steadfastly holding on to the belief that failure is simply not an option. There is always a way to succeed, even if it's hard, even if it takes time. There is always a way to make it work. There is no "If not" or "If I can't" in Link's mind; there is only "I will." This turns him into a person with an incredible determination, and it's what continues to get him through whatever hardships in his path.

Which brings us down to what Link is best known for, which is, of course, his heroic nature. His bravery is his trademark, as showcased by the Triforce of Courage. Even when all the odds are against him, he will charge in, weapons drawn and ready to do whatever he can to bring that obstacle down. No matter what loneliness or insecurities plague him, he will not give up until he has done what he has set out to do. He is always going to fight for the sake of other people.

Abilities/Skills:
Link has latent magical power that he can channel through items, such as his sword. This power is used as fuel for several abilities in his items, as well. (Thanks, Great Fairies.) He also has at least a small capacity for precognition, and is stated to be very sensitive to negative energies in the world around him, shown in canon as restless dreams and nightmares about Ganondorf prior to the start of Ocarina of Time. (Headcanon is that the previews that run if you let the start screen sit are also precognitive dreams that he had, and that the drawings on his treehouse of himself fighting a giant dinosaur are related, too.)

Link is a lot physically stronger than anyone his size has any right to be. He can push around giant heavy blocks and carry a lot of equipment without breaking much of a sweat. He can also hold his own in battle against giant monsters and crack through their armor with his sword. Strength is definitely a thing, here. So is endurance. This kid is talented at long-distance running, and he can take hits like nobody's business. He has his limits, but again, when you'd expect an average adult to go down, he's still picking himself back up. He has a lot of hearts. He's talented in archery and use of slingshots and boomerangs. He's also extremely agile, thanks to his combat experience. Flips, dodge rolls, and the like are a part of his daily life. His other skills include: fishing, swimming (including diving), animal handling, horseback riding (with and without a saddle), critical thinking, demolitions, navigation, time management, playing musical instruments, and bowling.

The majority of his capabilities in canon, though, come from his expansive inventory (addressed below). He also has access to songs with magical powers, which are summarized here for Ocarina of Time and here for Majora's Mask. The Song of Time and its variants will have no time travel powers in the game, because of all the complications it would involve. Whether or not the Song of Healing works as it did in canon should probably be handled on a case-by-case basis, though, as it could provide interesting player plot opportunities, but other times its effects may be undesired.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
➸ Highly skilled in combat, both in melee (swords, hammers) and at range (boomerang, slingshot, bow), as well as in dodging moves
➸ Very physically fit, very strong (even without items to aid him), high endurance and pain tolerance
➸ Resourceful and adaptable, makes use of his surroundings
➸ Adept and experienced at complex problem-solving
➸ Musically talented
➸ Good listener, strong empathy skills
➸ Works well alone or with others
➸ Very used to strange things happening, can just roll with it
➸ Learns quickly

Weaknesses:
➸ He's, like, 3'7" at best, okay? Reaching high shelves is hard to do on his own
➸ Curiousity killed the cat; he'll poke his nose into his surroundings constantly
➸ Ownership is a concept he's not very familiar with, so breaking and entering just because he doesn't get why it's a big deal could be a thing
➸ He can't use magic without items to channel them through, and even then they probably have to be made to be friendly to magic in order for him to do that
➸ Doesn't deal with failure well; even if he steps back from something for a while, he'll come back to it to try it again. He doesn't know how to let go and well and truly walk away
➸ Doormat instincts, doesn't tell people "no" very well. Or at all
➸ Not experienced at all in the use of technology or science
➸ In a job without clear direction, purpose, or urgency, he'd probably spend a lot of time napping instead of working

So... People have tried growing things in the gardens, right? [This video starts apropos of nothing, the camera aimed for Link's face. The camera keeps shifting, because even though he's sitting on his bed, he's rocking slightly as he idly kicks his feet.] Were the seeds already here? Or did they come through the Ingress?

I have these beans from home. [And here, the camera shifts wildly, because he's reaching into a pocket and pulling them out. He holds one up, a bright green pod, not unlike a green bean, but the beans themselves are in bright primary colors.] They're magic. They need good dirt to grow in... The soil in the gardens would be okay for them, right?

They don't grow into food or anything, though. They grow into floating plants that can carry people around. Sometimes they can grow instantly, but I've known others that didn't. [He doesn't know how long it took for them to grow. He just went to sleep for seven years, and when he woke up, there they were.] I don't know what makes the difference. Maybe it is the soil, though. [So... That's another reason why he's asking.]
